National Library of Latvia

Commonly known as the “Castle of Light”, this modern and stylish building on the opposite side of the Daugava river came to actual light on 2014.

Just a bridge span from the historical centre, the surreal facades of the National Library of Latvia define the best of Riga’s contemporary skyline, in opposition with the old spires of its UNESCO medieval Old Town. Take the elevator until the top floor to enjoy the best views. Free entrance.

Best way to get there:

Depart from Old Town Square and head towards the Akmens Tilts (Stone Bridge). Cross the bridge and you will find your destination on the left side.

The Corner House

The infamous KGB building on the crossroads of Brivibas and Stabu streets features the worst face of the Soviet regime in Latvia.

Its premises hold a basement of prison cells and dreaded cellars that beats any historical museum. For those interested on learning about a less pleasant but real side of Latvia, this is a place you definitely have to visit. There is a free exhibition and guided tours in English 5 times a day.

Best way to get there:

From the Freedom Monument, take the Brivibas iela and follow it for about 15 minutes until you reach Stabu iela. The building will be on the left side of the crossroads.
